The US Department of Homeland Security is implementing new security measures for international flights to the US. These ‘more flexible’ procedures, which include additional screening of passengers matching ‘current, intelligence-driven and threat-based characteristics’, will replace mandated extra screening for passengers from 14 mostly Islamic countries brought in following last year’s failed Christmas day attack.
The US Secretary of Homeland Security explained, ‘These new measures utilize real-time, threat-based intelligence along with multiple, random layers of security, both seen and unseen, to more effectively mitigate evolving terrorist threats.’
The new measures include the use of explosives trace detection, advanced imaging technology such a body scanners, canine teams, pat downs, random screening and more.
