The Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, is creating ‘more explosive activity and ash production’ than has been seen recently, expelling ‘denser, coarser ash higher into the atmosphere’. Meanwhile Greek protests have paralysed flights in the country.
This has led to the closure of a number of Irish airports by the Irish Aviation Authority. Sligo and Donegal will have restrictions in place until at least midnight. Dublin and Ireland West (Knock) will be restricted from 11.00 am until at least midnight and Galway will be restricted from 12.00 noon.
Waterford will remain open until at least 3.00 pm, Shannon airport until 5.30 pm, while Cork and Kerry will be open until at least midnight.
In the UK, the Civil Aviation Authority expect Inverness airport to be closed until 1.00 pm, while Glasgow, Prestwick, Stornoway, Benbecula, Tiree, Islay, Barra, Campbeltown and Derry will remain shut until 7.00 pm. Edinburgh, Belfast International and Belfast City are expected to be shut from 1.00 pm until 7.00 pm.
Carlisle, Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester are close to the 60 nautical mile buffer zone, however under current forecasts the CAA has assessed they can remain open safely.
